Rhodope Mountains · 8 days · From EUR 795
The hotel is called Zdravets Holiday Village and it sits on its own in the forest above the village of Orehovo, pitch-black sky at night, big pine trees all around. Rooms are simple but comfortable four-star rooms — twin beds or a double, private bathroom, balcony facing the forest, and the hotel has a restaurant, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, fitness room and free wifi. Rooms are shared with one other person of the same gender by default; single occupancy is available for a supplement. The whole property is a short walk from marked forest trails, so on free afternoons you can head out on your own without needing a car.
A normal day runs roughly like this: coffee and fruit at 07:30, 90 minutes of yoga from 08:00 to 09:30 (a stronger Vinyasa flow), breakfast buffet at 09:45, then out on the hike around 11:00 with a packed lunch, back mid-afternoon for tea, and the second, slower class at 18:00 — yin, restorative work, yoga nidra. Dinner at 19:30, a hot springs soak or a sauna most evenings, and people generally drift off early because of the walking. On days without a hike the schedule opens up and guests tend to spend the morning in the spa or reading on the terrace.
What makes this different from a lot of yoga weeks is that it's genuinely physical. You're walking four to five hours on hiking days at altitude with 400 to 500 metres of climbing, and the morning yoga is a proper two-block Vinyasa flow rather than a gentle stretch. It's sold as suitable for all levels and the teacher will offer modifications, but if you're coming purely for relaxation you'll get more out of it by skipping one or two of the longer walks. The flip side is you come home fitter than you left, after a week that costs a fraction of what a comparable Italian or Greek yoga week runs to.
The hikes are led by a local mountain guide who knows the Rhodope trail network and the area's folklore, and he'll point out Thracian ruins and the like on the way. Highlights across the week include Krushuna Falls (a series of travertine terraces with swimming in the pools at the bottom if you're brave), the enormous Devetashka cave, the Trigrad Gorge and the Devil's Throat cave, and the Chairite lakes — seven small glacial lakes strung together in a walk that takes most of a day. There's also an afternoon at the Velingrad thermal springs, one of the warmest mineral spa complexes in the Balkans, and a guided day in Plovdiv's old town.
Food is buffet-style, all three meals, generally a mix of Bulgarian home cooking and lighter Mediterranean dishes — shopska salad, grilled vegetables, stuffed peppers, rice and beans, grilled fish or chicken most evenings, plus soup, bread and fruit. Vegetarian and vegan guests are accommodated if you let them know before arrival; gluten-free is possible but worth flagging in advance. There's a small bar, but this isn't a party week — most people drink tea, wine with dinner, and are in bed by 22:00.
