Egypt
The heart of this retreat is the daily yoga practice with Susan, who has been teaching for over two decades and trained in Iyengar and Hatha styles. Her sessions are precise but gentle, and she adapts them to whoever is in the room. You'll also get guidance in pranayama and meditation, and she can offer advice on applying Ayurvedic principles to your own practice. Each class is different, so you'll cover a lot over the week.
Besides the yoga, the retreat is really about the location and the pace of life here. The property has a yoga shala on the roof with sea views, a dedicated meditation space, and a massage room. Down on the beach there's a coral reef, and the studio provides masks and snorkels. You can also arrange a desert safari, a trip to St. Catherine's Monastery, or a day hike to Mount Sinai. Closer to home, there's an Egyptian cooking class, and Susan's massages come highly recommended by previous guests.
The food is a highlight for many. Meals are freshly prepared, mostly vegetarian, and cater for vegan, raw, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets. They use local produce, including vegetables from a nearby farm, and often serve traditional Bedouin dishes. Dinner can be ordered each morning, either at the studio or at a local restaurant, and detox juice fasts are possible if you ask.
Because the retreat is small—up to nine guests—it feels more like staying at a friend's place than a hotel. The accommodation is simple but comfortable: private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, and sea views. You can also choose a shared twin room if you're traveling with someone. Susan is the kind of host who makes you feel welcome from the moment you arrive.
