Yoga Teacher Training and Wellness Escape on Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Kootenay Yoga School has been running teacher trainings for years, with programs in Joshua Tree, British Columbia, and now Mexico. On Isla Mujeres, the training is held at a property on the quieter southern end of the island, surrounded by jungle and just a few minutes' walk to the Caribbean Sea. The school's philosophy is that a training should feel immersive, not intensive. So while the days are full, they're paced to let you absorb what you're learning. The curriculum covers the anatomy of yoga, the detailed practice of 45 traditional poses, pranayama, yoga nidra, vinyasa flow, restorative yoga, the eight limbs, the yamas and niyamas, how to lead meditation, sequencing, and the art of savasana. You'll get two yoga alliance accredited manuals in PDF form, and there are workshops and evening activities like kirtan and movie nights. The lead teacher is Elizabeth Jane 'EJ', an E-RYT 500 with over a decade of teaching experience, who has led trainings from India to Malta to Indonesia. She's joined by Sarah Martinuik, a teacher known for a thorough, engaging style that balances on-the-mat practice with stimulating seminars. The accommodation is simple, eco-friendly, and set in six studio-style apartments with shared or private rooms. The food, all vegetarian and mostly organic, is a highlight—fresh, nourishing, and designed to keep you energized through long days of practice and study. Graduates leave eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as RYT®. The location is also special: less than 500 meters away is Punta Sur, a sacred area linked to the Mayan goddess Ixchel, where sunrise meditation feels genuinely inspiring.
