Pathways Academy of Life's 100-Hour Yoga Nidra Teacher Training is a full deep-dive into the theory and practice of Yoga Nidra, designed to give you the skills to teach it with confidence. It's run at Pathways Country Yoga Retreat in Eston, KwaZulu-Natal, set between dams and farmland where you can hear birds more than traffic. Jennifer Fitzsimmons, your host and lead trainer, has spent over two decades teaching teachers and wrote a book on the practice, so the curriculum comes from a place of real experience.
Over the ten days, you'll cover a lot. The curriculum includes yoga philosophy, an exploration of the subconscious mind from a yogic psychology perspective, the chakra system, and the layers of the subtle body. You'll learn the specific techniques for guiding Yoga Nidra, including how to set up a session, the different stages, and how to work with visualization and intention (Sankalpa). The program also touches on meditation, pranayama, and how to make these teachings relevant to people who might never step onto a yoga mat.
a big part of the value here is Jennifer's story. She's open about her own journey through anxiety and depression, and that's the thread that runs through the whole course. This isn't just a technique for relaxation – it's a framework for understanding why we suffer and how the mind can be rewired for peace. The small group size means you get personal attention, and there's a strong emphasis on self-practice and self-experience, which Jennifer believes is essential for anyone looking to teach.
The setting makes it work. The retreat center has a yoga deck, gardens, a pool, and access to nature walks. The days are structured but not rigid, leaving space for rest and reflection. You'll also get to experience some of the local area – there's mention of beach yoga and weekend excursions, though the main focus is clearly the training itself.
