Kerala · 14 days · From USD 676
The 14-day Panchakarma retreat at Ennakkathara Arya Vaidyasala is a deep dive into Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine. The program is built around the five therapeutic measures that give Panchakarma its name—vamana (induced vomiting), virechana (purgation), vasti (herbal enemas), nasya (nasal remedies), and raktamoksha (bloodletting). But don't let that scare you—these are only used when deemed necessary by the doctors. For most guests, the daily experience centers on gentler procedures like abhyanga (warm oil massage), swedana (herbal steam), and other therapies prescribed after a detailed consultation.
The retreat unfolds in three stages. First, preparatory procedures (poorva karma) loosen and move toxins toward the digestive tract using oral medications, oil therapies, and sudation. Then comes the main cleansing phase (pradhana karma), tailored to your strength and dosha imbalance. Finally, post-cleansing (paschat karma) stabilizes your system with specific foods and medicines to ensure long-term benefits.
The day follows a steady rhythm. You wake early for a gentle yoga class, then move into your personalized treatment, followed by a pure vegetarian breakfast. Mid-morning, you might attend a short class on Ayurveda and yoga philosophy, or have another treatment. Lunch is a fresh, simple meal, then the afternoon is free for rest. Evenings bring meditation or chanting, another possible treatment, a light dinner, and an early night.
The center is run by the Ennakkathara family, who have been practicing Ayurveda since 1977. Dr. Nikila Sudheer, the managing director, brings over 16 years of clinical experience and specializes in women's health and Ayurvedic cosmetology. Jayesh Dhananjayan, the yoga teacher, holds a master's degree in yoga and is certified in Hatha and Ashtanga. The combination of serious medical oversight and a homey, welcoming atmosphere sets this retreat apart.
