New Zealand · 16 days · From USD 1517
The retreat runs for sixteen days and fifteen nights, with a total of fifteen two-hour surf lessons. That works out to nearly a lesson a day, though the schedule is flexible and arranged around the best surf conditions and coaching times. Mornings often start with a lesson when the tide and swell are working, then the rest of the day is yours. With unlimited access to the school's boards, wetsuits, paddleboards, and kayaks, you can keep surfing, explore nearby beaches, or borrow a SUP and paddle up the Mangawhai estuary.
Aotearoa Surf School's philosophy is that surfing isn't just about catching waves—it's about understanding the ocean and being able to look after yourself in it. So lessons include reading wave patterns, understanding tides and currents, board selection and care, and the etiquette of crowded lineups. This is more than your standard surf camp; it's a surf education that aims to leave you self-sufficient in the water.
The property itself is modern and eco-conscious. The pods are brand new, with crisp white linens, flat-screen TVs, fast Wi-Fi, private decks with bean bags, and ocean views. There's a kitchen you can use, plus a stage, yoga area, and a shop on site. The school also runs kids' camps and corporate events from the same base, so there's an easy, community feel to the place.
Head coach Che leads the team, which includes instructors like Paul and Corne, who come in for specific praise in guest reviews. The coaching is adaptive—whether you've never stood up on a board or you're chasing the hollow section on a point break, the team tailors each session to where you're at. Previous guests consistently mention how well organized everything is, how clear the communication is, and how much they improved.
The area itself is a big part of the appeal. Te Arai Point and the surrounding beaches offer a variety of surf breaks, from rippable sandbars to longer point waves, and the nearby town of Mangawhai has a laid-back artsy vibe. You'll need a car to get around, which actually helps you feel like a local rather than a resort guest—you'll drive to the beach each day, grab coffee in town, and cook your own meals back at the pod. This is surfing on your own terms.
