200-Hour Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training on Sri Lanka's South Coast

Sri Lanka · 15 days · From USD 2050

The training follows a daily rhythm that starts early with pranayama, meditation, and a combined Hatha and Vinyasa class lasting two hours. After a brunch break, you'll return to the shala for a two-hour philosophy or anatomy session, which includes sharing circles and group discussions. Afternoons focus on teaching methodology, where you learn in-depth alignment, biomechanics, and how to instruct individual poses and link them into flows. Intelligent sequencing instruction begins after a few days, teaching you how to create classes that achieve a state of focused calm, or 'sattvic effect'. Leadership lessons become part of the methodology, helping you use language, voice, and body to deliver meaningful classes.

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics: asana warm-ups and variations, postural alignment, anatomy and therapeutic modifications, pranayama, meditation, yogic philosophy including the Yoga Sutras and Vedanta, the paths of yoga, subtle anatomy, and hands-on assisting. You'll also learn about injuries and special populations, and how to use props. One day is lecture-free, giving you time to study, relax, or enjoy the beach. Attendance at all classes is mandatory, and participants must complete an online portion and reading materials before arriving.

The training is led by Tanya Popovich, a senior teacher with an E-RYT 500 certification and a Yoga Acharya (Master of Yoga). Her teaching style blends Jivamukti, Anusara, Sivananda, and other schools, offering a unique approach that integrates traditional philosophy with modern alignment. The training takes place at Talalla Retreat, a 7-acre sustainable property with an outdoor pool, open-air yoga shala, Ayurvedic spa, and a restaurant serving fresh, locally sourced food. The property is home to various animals, adding to its peaceful, natural atmosphere. Reviews highlight the beautiful location, delicious food, and friendly staff, though some note that children are allowed and can occasionally be disruptive during evening classes.
