Kathmandu · 21 days · From USD 1500
The retreat runs for 21 days at Nepal Ayurveda Home in Kathmandu. Each morning begins with yoga and meditation, typically 90 minutes, led by an experienced instructor. After breakfast, you'll have a consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor, who assesses your constitution and any specific complaints, then prescribes a set of treatments — usually a mix of abhyanga (oil massage), shirodhara (warm oil poured on the forehead), steam therapy and herbal preparations. These are carried out by trained therapists in the treatment rooms on site.
Afternoons are left open. Some guests rest, others take a gentle walk in the surrounding area or read in the garden. There's often a second, gentler yoga session in the late afternoon, focused on stretching and breathing rather than strength. Evenings are quiet, with dinner served around 7pm and lights out early — the schedule is designed to reset sleep patterns as much as anything else.
The food is a big part of the programme. All meals are vegetarian, cooked fresh in the guesthouse kitchen, and tailored to your dosha and any dietary needs you've told them about. You won't get a fixed menu; the doctor may adjust what you eat as the weeks go on. Expect simple dishes like dal, rice, cooked vegetables, herbal teas and occasional Ayurvedic preparations. No alcohol or caffeine is served.
What sets this apart from a standard yoga holiday is the medical side. The Ayurvedic doctor is on site and involved throughout, not just for a single consultation. That means treatments change as you progress, and the team can respond if something isn't working. The guesthouse is small, so you're not one of fifty people in a programme — you get to know the staff and they get to know you.
Kathmandu itself is worth exploring on your days off. The guesthouse can arrange visits to Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple or the old royal squares. Some guests take a day trip to the hills for a short hike, though the programme is not physically demanding and you're not required to do any excursions. The focus stays on rest and treatment.
The 21-day length is deliberate: it takes about a week to settle into the routine and for the body to respond to the treatments. By the end, most guests report better sleep, less pain and a clearer sense of what to eat and how to move when they get home. You'll leave with a written plan from the doctor — diet suggestions, daily practices, and any herbal remedies to continue.
