21-Day Ayurvedic Slimming Retreat in Kerala: Doctor-Guided Weight Loss with Panchakarma, Yoga & Herbal Treatments

Kerala · 21 days

The Slimming Package is one of the Panchakarma programmes at this Ayurvedic hospital and yoga centre on the Kerala coast. It's built for people who need to lose weight and want it done under medical supervision, rather than by cutting calories alone. The minimum booking is 21 days — the team is blunt about why: changing your metabolism takes longer than three weeks of dieting.

Day one is an initial consultation with an Ayurveda doctor. Based on an examination and questions about your life and health, they work out your dosha type, then write your treatment and diet plan. That same day you usually get a full-body oil massage (Abhyangam) matched to your dosha. From day two onward, the daily treatments begin. The core one is Udvardhanam — a herbal powder massage performed by two therapists working in sync on both sides of your body for 30 to 45 minutes. It's designed to stimulate metabolism and break down fat tissue. The detox phase is closed with a Vasti treatment, a medicated enema that clears undigested metabolic waste (Ama). Then comes the build-up phase, again with powder massages, and rest periods after treatments so the effect can settle.

Your daily treatment time runs 90 to 120 minutes on average, though the doctor can prescribe longer or shorter sessions depending on how you're responding. The doctor sees you daily, so the plan adjusts as you go. This isn't a fixed menu of spa treatments — it's a course of therapy with a doctor reacting to your progress. All medicines and therapies prescribed in your plan are included in the price, as is full-board Ayurvedic food.

On the food side, you eat according to your dosha type. The dishes are built to support weight loss without feeling like a punishment diet — the resort's restaurant manager, Prasad, comes from an Ayurveda family and runs the kitchen, combining Indian flavours with the demands of the treatment menu. You will not be left hungry, and the menu changes day to day. Vegetarian food is standard.

Yoga and meditation are part of the programme and are included whether or not you've done either before. Classes are split for beginners and advanced students, and there's no pressure to attend if you'd rather rest. Day trips are also included in the package, though your doctor may advise against travel during certain phases — best to book longer trips before your treatment starts.

The resort itself is on a clifftop in Chowara, about 20 km south of Trivandrum, with its own stretch of beach below. It's a green, quiet property with gardens, a pool and treatment blocks, and it has been running Ayurvedic programmes for decades. Most guests come specifically for treatment, so the atmosphere is calm and health-focused rather than resort-party.
