3-Day Authentic Ashram Yoga and Meditation Retreat in Hungary

Hungary · 3 days · From USD 150

The retreat is based at Ananda Ashram, run by the Vedic Dharma Hindu Association, which traces its roots to Swami Tilak, who founded the Vedic School in 1978. The ashram is set in Leányfalu, a quiet village about 40 minutes from Budapest, surrounded by spacious gardens and forest that opens into the Pilis Mountains—a region some spiritual traditions call the “Heart Chakra of the Earth.” The property includes meditation halls, gardens for quiet time, a library, and simple, clean rooms.

Your day follows a natural rhythm: morning silence with warm lemon water, sunrise meditation, pranayama, Hatha yoga, and a fire ceremony (Havan) or ritual (Shiva Lingam pooja). After an Ayurvedic breakfast and a main meal at midday, afternoons are free for rest, study, or a walk to the Danube. Evenings bring a philosophy class with discussion, then meditation and a gratitude practice. On Fridays, there’s a free day to explore Budapest or visit Szentendre, or just stay and rest.

The teaching is led by Dr. Shankari, a yoga teacher with over 20 years of study under her Guru, Swami Shankaratilaka, and a Master’s degree in Yoga Therapy from Dehradun, India. Swami Shankaratilaka, a direct disciple of Swami Tilak, is a highly respected teacher in the Orthodox Vedic tradition. He’s known for making complex philosophical ideas accessible and has a gentle sense of humour. The monks’ background includes running their own restaurant, so the food is a highlight.

The experience is intimate—group size is capped at eight participants—so you get personal attention and space to ask questions. The atmosphere is calm, respectful, and unpressured. Whether you come to learn about Vedic teachings, to reset from stress, or just to be still for a few days, you can take as much or as little from the schedule as you need.
