Portugal · 3 days · From USD 399
This is a very particular kind of retreat. It’s not a luxury escape and it doesn’t try to be. Instead, it’s a grounded, practical introduction to Kundalini Yoga and the broader healing traditions that Amrit Singh has been working with for decades. The teaching is dense and direct: sessions explain the why behind the postures and meditations, so that you leave knowing how to apply those tools when you’re back in your normal routine. The group is intentionally small, maxing out at around eight people, which means the teaching can adapt to the level and interests of the actual people in the room.
Each morning (if you choose to join) starts early — between 05:30 and 07:30 — with yoga and meditation. After a vegan breakfast you move into the main learning block: lectures and discussions that cover the theory behind the practice, the chakras and energy channels, and the 5 Levels of Healing framework that anchors the whole program. Afternoons are free. The evening session, starting around 18:30, is a half-hour of communal chanting, often at the nearby ashram — the biggest Kundalini Yoga ashram in Europe, set in a separate location but part of a network Amrit is connected to.
What makes this different from a purely asana-focused retreat is the depth of the ancillary treatments. Amrit offers optional individual consultations in Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture or shiatsu massage, and he’ll sometimes suggest a personalized herbal formula that you can continue taking after you return home. During a longer stay you’d also be introduced to Karam Kriya — the numerology system that looks at how numbers influence personality, relationships and life patterns. Guests report that those extra layers of insight can be surprisingly practical, and that adds to the feeling that you’re getting a real education, not just a temporary reset.
You should know that the accommodation is rustic and low-tech, in keeping with the ethos. The nights are silent, the stars are bright, and the nearest tarmac road is a few minutes away. Reviews have noted that during wet weather (spring and autumn) some guests found the cabins damp and the outdoor facilities less pleasant, so if you prefer guaranteed sunshine and dry living quarters, the summer months are the safest bet. For those willing to trade a few creature comforts for a deep dive into a traditional practice led by someone who genuinely teaches from experience, this is a memorable few days.
