Home › Retreats › 4-Day High-Altitude Trekking and Spiritual Pilgrimage to Apu Ausangate in Peru
Peru · 4 days · From USD 587
The journey starts early in Cusco. You're driven to Pacchanta, a small Andean community at the foot of Ausangate, where you meet the master healers (Paqos) who will guide the pilgrimage. From there, you hike through landscapes of glaciers, rocky valleys, and bright blue lagoons, while horses carry your camping gear and luggage. The first night's camp is set up in a scenic spot, and the group gathers for the Hallpaysunchis ceremony, a ritual of gratitude to Pachamama that formally opens the spiritual path.
Day two is focused on the Karpay initiation, an ancestral energetic transmission meant to awaken what the Andeans call the 'seed of power' within each person. Guided by the healers, you practice Pichay cleansing meditations and learn about the three Andean worlds: Ukhu Pacha (the inner world), Kay Pacha (the present world), and Hanan Pacha (the spiritual world). The trek continues through the area of the Seven Lagoons, with more time for silence and reflection.
The third day features the fire ceremony, a central ritual in Andean cosmology. Around a sacred fire, you make offerings of intentions, gratitude, and prayers to the Apus and cosmic energies. This is presented as a way to release what no longer serves you and open space for healing. The evening ends with a Munay meditation under the stars, surrounded by the silence of the mountains.
The final morning includes a closing meditation to integrate the experience, followed by a soak in the natural hot springs of Pacchanta. Before departing, the group shares a Pachamanca, a traditional Andean meal cooked underground with hot stones. Then you're driven back to Cusco, ending the pilgrimage.
What makes this trek stand out is the combination of real spiritual practice with genuine wilderness. The Ausangate region is far less crowded than the Inca Trail or other popular routes, and the presence of Q'eros healers adds an authenticity you won't find on a standard trekking tour. You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking at altitude for several hours each day.
