4-Day Yoga and Surf Wellness Escape in Portugal's Countryside

The retreat is held at Buddha Retreats, a dedicated yoga and surf centre in the village of Columbeira, about an hour's drive north of Lisbon and 20 kilometres from the surf beaches of Peniche and Baleal. The house sits in lush, green countryside near the western wine route, with the medieval town of Óbidos a short drive away. The setting is peaceful and rural, with a pool and gardens that invite you to simply relax between activities.

Yoga sessions are led by certified teachers and focus on Iyengar yoga, a precise and alignment-based practice that's both physically demanding and deeply restorative. No matter your experience, instructors offer variations so beginners and advanced yogis can practice side by side. The yoga-for-surfers emphasis on core strength, balance, and opening through the shoulders and hips means you'll feel the benefits in the water.

Surf lessons take place at some of Europe's most forgiving beach breaks, with waves suited to beginners. Instructors like João, who grew up in Peniche and has over a decade of teaching experience, keep groups small and split you by ability so everyone gets the attention they need. Boards and wetsuits are included, and a short drive gets you to the beach.

The daily rhythm combines active mornings, ocean time, and relaxing evenings—often with dinner on the terrace, sharing stories with new friends. Food is home-cooked, vegetarian-friendly, and based on fresh local produce, with hearty breakfasts and social dinners that are highlights in themselves.
