4-Night Dark Retreat in Mazunte, Oaxaca: Silent Meditation in a Lightless Chamber

Mexico · 5 days · From EUR 771 (indicative)

Bliss Haven sits in Mazunte, a small beach village on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca known for its bohemian feel and its sunsets. The property has a pool, a garden, a terrace, a yoga deck and a shared kitchen, and the ocean is a short walk away. Before you go into the dark you can swim, walk into town, or just sit by the pool.

The dark chambers are the point of the place. There are three of them, each temperature-controlled and ventilated, with insulated windows and doors, curved walls and very little furniture. Inside each one there is a bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower, plus a practice area with a yoga mat and a meditation cushion. Drinking water is kept in the space itself. A switch by the door turns on a light outside, which is how you let the team know you need something without breaking the darkness.

Your host is Veronica, a certified mindfulness coach and a Kaula Tantra Yoga teacher. She has done dark retreats herself, several times, and the reviews single her out for having thought through the practical details — the food, the check-ins, the small things that make four days without light manageable.

The schedule is deliberately thin. Day one is arrival, sunset at Punta Cometa, intention setting and the candle ceremony. Days two to four are yours in the dark, with breakfast and dinner delivered and support on hand. Day five is the sunrise walk and check-out. There is no group programme to keep up with and no pressure to meditate for a set number of hours — the retreat is built around your own practice.

What separates this from a silent meditation week elsewhere is the total absence of light. The practice is aimed at pratyahara, the withdrawal of the senses, and guests report that sustained time in the dark brings up memories and emotions that are easier to avoid in daylight. The listing is honest that this can be ecstatic or difficult, sometimes both. If you are looking for a yoga holiday with two classes a day and a beach afternoon, this is not it.
