Rishikesh · 5 days · From USD 216
Akshi Yogashala has been training yoga teachers in Rishikesh for years, and this retreat is essentially a taster of what they do — the same teachers, the same location, the same sattvic vegetarian food, but compressed into five days instead of a month-long certification.
The daily rhythm goes like this: you're up early for a 7am asana class (Hatha or Vinyasa, depending on the day), then breakfast, then pranayama and meditation. There are theory sessions on stress management and yoga philosophy, which are optional but worth attending if you want more than just the physical practice. Afternoons are unscheduled, and evenings include either free time or group excursions — the Ganga Aarti ceremony is a highlight, with hundreds of people gathered by the river as the sun sets.
What sets this apart from a random yoga holiday is the teaching team. Sri Vivek spent 15 years living in an ashram and studied with Himalayan sages before starting to teach; Deepak Bhatt has a Master's degree in Yoga and has been leading trainings since 2013; Maya-ji specialises in meditation and Yoga Nidra and can translate for Russian speakers. These aren't drop-in instructors — they've dedicated their lives to this.
The location is the real draw, though. Rishikesh is called the 'Yoga Capital of the World' for a reason: the town exists for yoga practice. The Ganges runs through it, the Himalayas rise behind it, and every morning you wake up to temple bells and birdsong rather than traffic. The ashram has a yoga shala, a garden, a terrace, and views of the surrounding hills.
The retreat suits beginners and intermediate practitioners — advanced students might find the pace relaxed, but the teaching quality is high enough that you'll still learn something. Solo travellers do well here; many guests come alone and end up making friends over meals and shared practice.
