6-Day Plant-Based Yoga & Meditation Retreat in Northern Thailand's Rice Fields

6-Day Plant-Based Yoga & Meditation Retreat in Northern Thailand's Rice Fields

Chiang Mai · 6 days · From EUR 438

Suan Sati sits in a traditional farming community at the base of Thailand's highest mountain range, surrounded by rice paddies that stretch to the horizon. It's roughly a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Chiang Mai International Airport, but guests consistently describe it as feeling far more remote than that. The yoga shala floats on a pond, so you practice looking out at mountains and farmland. The accommodation is newly built adobe, and the centre runs on solar power with gas-powered showers.

The daily structure is consistent: two asana and meditation sessions (typically one in the morning, one in the evening) plus one workshop held either mid-morning or in the evening. Recent workshops have covered yoga, music, art, philosophy, dance, community and play. You get the specific schedule on arrival, but expect around 4-5 hours of programmed activity per day and long stretches of free time in between. There are books and games on site, and walks around the rice fields and down to the local river are a common way to fill an afternoon.

Food is a serious part of why people book this. The kitchen serves a 100% plant-based buffet three times a day, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks included. Chefs specialise in Northern Thai cooking but mix in familiar Thai dishes and fusion recipes, plus tropical fruit and herbal drinks. They cater to gluten-free, soy-free, nut allergies, dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian diets. Water, tea and coffee are available all day.

What separates this from a standard yoga holiday is the price and the setting. At €438 for six days with all meals and two daily classes, it's dramatically cheaper than comparable retreats in Thailand, and guests repeatedly mention affordability in reviews. The trade-off is that you're in a dorm unless you pay for the private queen room, and there's no pool or spa. What you get instead is a working farm, a small community, and teachers who are on site rather than flying in for the week.

Lisa Hardy is the lead yoga teacher. She was a licensed physiotherapist in Austria specialising in fascia treatment before deciding passive treatment wasn't addressing root causes. She completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Goa and a one-month Ayurveda intensive in Kerala, met Will in India, and moved to Thailand to co-found Suan Sati. She's now E-RYT 500 certified and blends Bhakti yoga, movement, breath and music into her classes, with ongoing study in fascia therapy and Yin.
