6-Day Wellness and Nature Retreat in the Knuckles Mountains with Daily Yoga and Cultural Tours

A typical day at Welikande starts with a 90-minute yoga class at 7:30 in the shala, which looks straight out across the valley and the mountains beyond. The teachers cater to every level, so beginners and experienced practitioners get the same thoughtful attention. Classes finish with a guided meditation, and then you go to breakfast. After that, the day's activity begins — usually around 10:30 and running until lunch at 13:30, with some activities taking up the whole morning and some continuing after a break. There's a second yoga class at 17:30, then dinner at 19:00.

The activities on offer are built around the local community. On the Tea Plantation & Waterfall Tour, you ride through the tea fields by tuk-tuk, stop at five waterfalls, and can swim in the last one. A picnic lunch and a stop at a local tea shop for hot tea and short eats come with it. The Heeloya Trek is led by state-licensed guides who walk you through rice paddies, tea plantations and pine forests, explaining the herbs and spices used in the food they serve. You eat lunch by a waterfall and can swim before heading back. There's also a cooking class where you hike 3km into the rice paddies to meet a local female cook who has rebuilt two authentic mud-and-wood houses. You harvest jackfruit, greens and coconuts from the property, cook your lunch in an outdoor kitchen, and eat cross-legged on the first floor. After lunch you might help with planting or harvesting rice — mud between the toes is part of it — then cool off in the river.

Spa treatments are another option. Ayurveda is the tradition here, and the massage uses local herbs and oils, followed by a herbal steam bath called Vashta Swedha. Mandala painting is also on the list, done in a peaceful art room with a local teacher guiding you through the ancient meditative practice. You can keep your painted wooden disc or leave it hanging in reception with the others.

The retreat has its roots in a real place. The owner Mike, who guests mention by name, runs the estate with his wife Toushary, who cooks. Reviews praise the personal care — how Mike connects with each guest and encourages everyone to get to know each other. Yoga teachers come through with their own training; one, Serena, is a classically trained dancer who qualified in Dharamshala, India and teaches Ashtanga, flow and restorative classes.

One thing they're careful about is responsible tourism. Because the area is rural and conservative, they ask guests to bring a one-piece swimsuit or a t-shirt to cover a bikini. It's a small gesture that goes a long way toward keeping the relationship with the local community warm and respectful.
