India · 7 days · From USD 449
The days at India Yoga School follow a steady rhythm, but there's room to make the retreat your own. Each morning begins with an hour of self-practice, where you can work on whatever you've been learning or just stretch and breathe. After that, a teacher guides you through pranayama—covering techniques like Anulom Vilom, Bhastrika, and Ujjayi—and then leads a Hatha or Ashtanga Vinyasa class. Breakfast follows, and by mid-morning you're into the signature part of the week: aerial yoga. Using silk hammocks, you'll learn the fundamentals, work on core strength and stability, and play with inversions you might not try on the mat. It's challenging in a good way, and the teachers are careful to keep it accessible for beginners while still offering plenty for more experienced students. The afternoon brings more yoga philosophy and anatomy, and the early evening is reserved for meditation and mantra chanting, with mantras like Om and the Gayatri Mantra explained so you understand what you're repeating. You'll have at least four classes a day, so it's a proper immersion, but Saturday is a half day and Sunday is for rest, giving you time to walk to Mandrem Beach or join an optional group excursion. One of the things that sets this retreat apart is the chance to mix with students on the school's longer teacher training courses—you'll sometimes practice together, which adds energy and variety to the sessions. The teachers are a big part of why guests rate this place so highly. Shivansh, the lead teacher, has an unusual background: he studied software engineering at NIT Patna, trained in wrestling as a teenager, and later earned a postgraduate diploma in acting in Mumbai. That range shows up in his teaching, which is precise and alignment-focused but also creative and fun. Archita, a lawyer-turned-yoga-teacher with 200- and 500-hour certifications, brings clarity and structure to her classes. The team's warmth and dedication come through in the reviews, with guests describing the shala as beautiful and the teaching as some of the best they've found in Mandrem. The campus itself sits within a garden full of birdlife, with a vegan cafe and meditation corners. It's 17 km from Manohar Parrikar International Airport and 650 meters from the beach, so you can settle in quickly. The schedule notes that smoking, drinking, and other substances are not allowed on-site, which helps keep the atmosphere calm and focused.
