Lumbini, in Nepal's southern plains, is the birthplace of the Buddha and one of the world's great places of pilgrimage. This week-long retreat brings you to a monastery or retreat centre near the sacred area for a week of monastic routine, meditation, chanting, Buddhist philosophy and quiet reflection.

Each day begins and ends with prayers and chanting, around guided meditation, teachings on mindfulness and philosophy, and simple participation in monastery life. On days four and five you make guided visits to the Maya Devi Temple, the Sacred Garden, the Ashoka Pillar and the international monasteries. On day six, longer meditation periods give you time for respectful conversation with monks where appropriate. The week closes with final teachings and a blessing or ceremony where it fits the monastery's tradition.

Return domestic flights from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa and all transfers are included, along with six nights in the monastery or retreat centre, vegetarian monastic meals and an English-speaking coordinator. Teachings suit beginners as well as experienced practitioners.

Groups are small (1 to 10 guests). October to March is the most comfortable season.
