7-Day Trail Running & Hiking Adventure in Madeira

7-Day Trail Running & Hiking Adventure in Madeira

Portugal · 7 days · From EUR 1395

The week is built around Madeira's levada network — the old irrigation channels that run across the island through laurel forest, tunnels and cliff-cut paths. These are mostly gentle gradient trails, which is why they work so well as running routes: you get real distance without the technical difficulty of a full mountain scramble. Days alternate between easier valley levadas and longer mountain days.

Where this retreat differs from a general Madeira hiking package is the pace and the volume. A hiking tour might cover 8–12 km in a day; here the framing is trail running, with 10–20 km per day and roughly 50–80 km across the week. The other running retreats on Madeira tend to be based in Funchal or on the south coast resorts, whereas this one is based in Ponta do Sol on the quieter south-west, which puts the western levadas and Paul da Serra plateau within easier reach.

The guide is the same person across the whole week, not a rotating cast of freelancers. That means they adjust the plan based on how the group is actually moving — if a day turns out harder than expected, the next day gets shortened, and vice versa. They also handle the practical side: driving the minibus to trailheads, booking lunch stops, and knowing which trails get busy with tour groups and which are empty.

Madeira's weather is genuinely unpredictable even in the good months (April to October). The trails at altitude can be in cloud while the coast is sunny, so the schedule is somewhat flexible by design. The guesthouse in Ponta do Sol is a fixed base for all seven nights, which means no packing and repacking — you unpack once.

Food is a mix of guesthouse breakfasts, packed trail lunches eaten somewhere with a view, and dinners at local restaurants in the evenings, usually simple island cooking: grilled fish like espada or tuna, bolo do caco flatbread, fresh fruit. It's not a health-cuisine setup; it's fuel for running.
