8-Day Balinese Yoga, Culture & Village Wellness Retreat in Central Bali

8-Day Balinese Yoga, Culture & Village Wellness Retreat in Central Bali

Indonesia · 8 days · From EUR 515

The retreat is held at Balitrees Retreats in Sesandan, a village near Mount Batukaru, roughly two hours by road from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Instruction is in English throughout, and every teacher is Balinese. The main retreat center sits in the middle of rice paddies, with accommodation spread across the village in homestays or guesthouses within a short walk or shuttle ride.

Watukaru yoga is the style taught here — a Balinese lineage rather than the vinyasa or hatha you would find in a Western studio. Krishna and Dewi lead the traditional yoga, meditation and pranayama sessions. Adi, who has taught for around thirty years, handles yoga therapy, chakra opening work and Balinese martial arts. Dewi's own path is worth knowing: she worked as a rice farmer before training as a yoga teacher, and that connection to village life runs through the whole week.

A typical day looks like this: yoga and meditation first thing, breakfast, then a cultural activity such as rice farming or coconut oil making, lunch, another yoga and meditation session in the late afternoon, dinner, and an evening village activity — trekking, a paddy walk or a community cleanup. Excursions break up the pattern. The waterfall visit includes a simple Balinese Hindu purification ritual, and some mornings the group travels to a nearby beach to practise outdoors instead of in the shala.

What separates this from other Bali yoga retreats is where the money goes and who is teaching. Accommodation is in villagers' homes or small local guesthouses, income is shared with those households, and the teachers live in the area. You are not in a purpose-built resort with a Balinese facade; you are in the village. If you want infinity pools and a smoothie bar, this is the wrong week. If you want to farm rice in the morning and do yoga in the afternoon, it is the right one.

Meals are provided daily in vegetarian, vegan or regular versions, with dietary needs confirmed before you arrive. Rooms are air-conditioned, and the property has a pool, spa, garden, yoga shala, free Wi-Fi and bicycles. Airport transfers from Ngurah Rai International Airport can be arranged for an additional fee. Check-in is 2 p.m. on day one, check-out 1 p.m. on day eight, and the daily schedule shifts with weather and local conditions.
