Home › Retreats › 8-Day Darkness & Silence Retreat in the Sacred Valley, Peru
Peru · 8 days · From EUR 1560
Melissa Wasi sits in Pisac, in Peru's Sacred Valley, about an hour from Cusco. It's an andean property — stone and adobe, mountain air, terraced hillsides — chosen because it's quiet enough for a silence retreat to actually work. The altitude is real (Pisac is around 2,900m), so the first day or two are deliberately slow.
The retreat runs on an indigenous practice whose Quechua name points at both restoration and darkness. Practically, that means blocks of complete silence, periods spent in a darkened room or dwelling, and guided sensory work. You might spend a session working with scent, another with touch, another with sound, another with taste — each one a way of being present without relying on sight or conversation. Gentle movement (stretching, slow walking, simple breath work) is woven in so the body doesn't stiffen up. Nothing is forced and nobody is timed.
A typical day has a morning practice, a shared meal in silence or with minimal talk, an afternoon darkness or sensory session, and an evening wind-down. As the week goes on, the facilitators usually extend the silence blocks and the dark periods, so the retreat deepens rather than repeating the same day eight times. There's free time for journaling, lying down, or staring at the mountains, which is often when the useful thinking happens.
What makes this one different from a spa detox or a silent meditation course is the combination: Andean lineage practice, high-altitude setting, and darkness as the tool rather than a gimmick. Darkness retreats are rare in South America, and rarer still in the Andes. The facilitator team is confirmed before your stay; the retreat is led by Kamel, who is based in Peru. Exact bios and the full supporting team are shared once you book, because the group composition changes with each date.
Meals are tailored to the group and dietary needs are handled — you tell them yours and it's confirmed. Rooms are assigned per booking, with private and shared options. Everything else — transfers, what's not included — is confirmed with the leader before payment. This is deliberately a low-ceremony booking process; you send a request, the leader confirms dates and final price, and then you pay.
