8 Day Jungle Wellness Escape: Original Yoga and Ayurveda Retreat in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka · 8 days · From USD 1811

Ulpotha is Sri Lanka's original yoga retreat, founded in 1997 by Giles and Viren Perera with the aim of restoring traditional village life and organic farming. It's not a purpose-built wellness center but a real, living village where guests become part of the daily rhythm. The retreats run from Sunday to Sunday, either 7 or 14 nights, and each week hosts a different international yoga teacher, so the style of yoga varies—from Iyengar to Vinyasa Krama to Hatha— but the setting and structure stay consistent.

A typical day starts with breakfast available from 7 am (or later for those practicing yoga), followed by a morning yoga session that usually finishes around 10 am. The rest of the morning and early afternoon are completely unscheduled. You can book a massage or an Ayurvedic treatment, go for a swim in the lake, take a bicycle out to explore the village, or just lie in a hammock with a book. Lunch is another organic vegetarian meal, and then there's more free time until the afternoon yoga session, which runs from about 5 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings there's no yoga at all, giving you extra space for integration or rest.

The food is a highlight for most guests. Everything is grown on the land, cooked over open fires in big pots, and served buffet-style. Breakfasts include Sri Lankan specialties, fresh coconut, Ayurvedic porridge, and teas. Dinners are eaten by firelight, and guests often linger long after the meal talking or just listening to the jungle sounds. Once a week there's a guided excursion to nearby cultural heritage sites, and there's a deeply relaxing massage available each week with visiting therapists—included in the summer season, and available to past guests in the winter season.

The retreat is led each week by a resident host and yoga teacher, plus the visiting international teacher. Giles, one of the co-owners, is often on site. The atmosphere is friendly, unpressured, and genuinely communal. Many guests come solo and leave with lifelong friends. The combination of no electricity, no Wi-Fi, and no scheduled obligations can feel confronting at first, but most people find that within a day or two they slip into a deeper, quieter gear. It's a genuinely transformative place, though not in a hype-y way—more in the sense that you leave feeling reset in a way that's hard to put into words.
