Home › Retreats › 8-Day Natural Liver & Gallbladder Detox in the South African Bush
South Africa · 8 days · From USD 1308
This is not a spa detox. There are no smoothie bars, no scheduled yoga flows, no wellness lectures. What you get instead is a focused eight-day cleanse, guided by a family that has lived in and studied this stretch of African bush for most of their lives. Mesia grew up here, learning about herbs and natural medicine from a young age; Peter came from a Western corporate career and now leads guests through the history and landscape he knows in depth. Together they run the lodge, cook much of the food, and lead the walks.
The nature reserve itself does a lot of the work. It sits within the Greater Mapungubwe UNESCO World Heritage Site, an area that was home to one of Africa's earliest civilisations from around 450 AD. Ancient baobabs frame the restaurant terrace, and wildlife moves freely through the surrounding land. The family takes guests to Rainmakers Rock and Leopard Rock, sharing the history of the Monomotapa civilisation and the Rain Queen as they go. A bush braai at Leopard Rock is part of the experience.
The detox program itself follows a careful structure. From day two, every meal and drink is chosen to support the liver and gallbladder through their cleansing cycle. The family teaches you what each natural product does, and why certain foods are off the table for the seven days of the cleanse. On day six the process peaks, and the family is honest that the night can be a challenge. Day seven is for rest and gentle reintroduction to regular food, and day eight you leave.
This is a small, family-run place. The same people cook your meals, lead your walks and check how you're feeling. The retreat welcomes solo travellers and gives you as much solitude or company as you want. If you want to extend your stay, arrange extra nights in the Kruger or at Mapungubwe, the family will sort it. Transfers from Johannesburg take about six hours, or you can fly into Polokwane and drive two.
