Home › Retreats › Adult Surf Camp in Costa Rica, Peru & the British Virgin Islands
United States · 7 days
Each trip starts with a flight to a set airport, where a WB Surf Camp instructor meets you and drives you to the hotel. From Costa Rica that's Liberia International Airport (arrive 12–3pm, depart 1–4pm), for the British Virgin Islands it's Saint Thomas Airport (arrive 12–4pm, depart 3–5pm), and for Peru it's Trujillo International Airport (arrive by 9am, depart 3–5pm). You don't arrange ground transport — it's included.
Days settle into a rhythm. You're up early for breakfast, then out for the first surf session while the wind is still offshore and the water is empty. Lessons run two to three hours depending on conditions, with the group split by ability so beginners are working on popping up and paddling in the whitewater while more experienced surfers get video analysis and help with turning and positioning. Lunch is back at the hotel, then you have a few free hours — this is when people swim, read, walk into town, or sleep off the morning. A second session goes out in the late afternoon, usually shorter, and then it's dinner together and an early night.
What separates this from other surf camps is that WB Surf Camp has been running trips to these specific locations for years, including Chicama in Peru — one of the longest left-hand point breaks in the world. They also run kids and teen camps in the same spots, so the logistics, the hotels and the local knowledge aren't improvised. Instructors know which tide works at which break and will move the session if the conditions are wrong rather than putting you in bad water.
Accommodation is a hotel near the break, shared between two people by default. If you want your own room, single room upgrades are available and the price depends on the destination. Solo travellers are welcome, but the shared rate is based on double occupancy and you need to bring someone to share with — the camp doesn't pair adults up as roommates.
The teaching is straightforward. Expect your instructor to watch you, tell you what you're doing wrong, and put you back in position to try again. There's no formal classroom component. Over a week, most beginners get to the point of standing and riding unbroken waves, and intermediates usually leave with one or two specific things fixed — a better bottom turn, less fear on a bigger wave, or simply more time on a board than they'd get at home.
You can also arrive early or stay on after the camp ends. You just need to book your own accommodation and airport transfers for those extra days.
