Alentejo · 7 days · From USD 1200
Quinta Camarena is a rural property near the Alentejo coast, about an hour south of Lisbon. The main house is Villa do Laranjal, built in the traditional regional style with thick whitewashed walls, and the rest of the accommodation spreads out from there: hillside rooms tucked into a private forest up a 250-metre path, a country loft under the roof of an old Alentejo house, and the Casita Mãe apartment with its own kitchenette and patios. There's a pool, a gym, a sauna, gardens and trails running straight off the property. It's a working smallholding with a sustainability setup the hosts will walk you through on the property tour — solar, water capture, kitchen garden, that kind of thing — and there are dogs and cats around who are, as the house puts it, the four-legged staff.
The Not-So-Serious Fitness retreat is the core offering. Training is led by a personal trainer (Pedro has looked after groups here and gets named in reviews), and the sessions change based on who's booked — indoor gym work, outdoor circuits, running, yoga, hiking. Guests repeatedly mention that the plan is flexible: if the group wants to swap a session for a surf lesson or shift the schedule, that happens. One review describes it as 'a great balance of activities and relaxing time'. Meals matter here too; brunch is a big spread and dinner is seasonal cooking with wine poured every night.
The Alentejo Adventure week adds horse riding through the forest — one guest called it the highlight of their trip — plus SUP on a protected river, coastal hikes, and a three-course dinner cooked by a local chef in his own private dining room. The Surf, Yoga & Wine week is more surf-forward: mornings in the water on Portugal's west coast, afternoons on the mat, evenings with local wine. What all the retreats share is the location itself. The Alentejo coast is dramatic, undeveloped and often empty, with cliffs, long beaches and small historic towns of whitewashed streets. It's a genuinely different stretch of Portugal from the Algarve.
Because the property is small and the hosts live on site, the feel is more like staying with friends who happen to have a gym and a sauna than checking into a resort. Guests eat together at a long table, but there's no obligation to join everything. Solo travellers, couples and groups of friends all show up. The reviews skew towards people in their 30s to 50s who want to move their bodies during the day and drink good wine at night without anyone lecturing them about either.
Beyond the hosted retreat weeks, Quinta Camarena also runs themed hosted stays through autumn 2026 — writing, yoga with a guest teacher, and health-focused weeks — but the core programme is the fitness, adventure and surf/yoga retreats described above.
