Algarve Beach Wellness Retreat: Yoga, Pilates & Coastal Hiking Week

Portugal · 8 days · From EUR 1150

The day has a simple shape. You're up for a 90-minute class at 07:30 — vinyasa on some mornings, a slower hatha or yin session on others, depending on how the group is feeling. Breakfast follows at 09:00, and it's a proper one: fruit, eggs, local bread, yoghurt, coffee. Then there's a stretch of the day that's yours. Some mornings that means a guided coastal walk — the cliffs west of the village have a marked trail with views down to the sea — and other mornings it's completely open. Lunch is at 13:30 back at the house. Afternoon classes run around 17:30, usually Pilates or a restorative yoga session, and dinner is at 19:30.

What separates this from the dozens of similar yoga weeks on the Algarve coast is that the teaching is genuinely technical. The instructor holds a full Pilates certification as well as a yoga teaching qualification and has been running these weeks for years, so a mat class isn't just a slowed-down yoga sequence with different names — it's real Pilates, with the breathing and the spinal articulation and the small adjustments. If you've done yoga for a while and want to understand what your pelvis is actually doing in warrior two, this is the setup for that.

The property itself is small — under a dozen rooms, spread over two floors of a whitewashed building with terracotta floors and shutters. There's a purpose-built shala with wooden floors and props (blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets), an outdoor pool that catches sun most of the day, and a covered terrace where most meals get eaten. It's a ten-minute walk down to the beach and about the same into the village, where there's a small market, a couple of cafés and a handful of restaurants. Faro airport is roughly an hour's drive.

One day midweek is usually given over to a boat trip along the coast — the Ponta da Piedade rock formations near Lagos are the usual destination, with time for swimming off the boat. There's also an afternoon set aside for a longer hike for anyone who wants it, while others stay behind and use the pool. Nothing on the schedule is compulsory; people skip sessions when they're tired and nobody minds.

The group is typically a mix of solo travellers in their thirties to fifties, a few pairs of friends, and occasionally a couple. Because the number of rooms is limited, the whole thing stays intimate without being intense — you'll know everyone's name by the end of the first dinner. Meals are shared at one long table, which does most of the social work for you.
