Home › Retreats › Algarve Surf Camp and Surf Courses: Learn to Ride the Atlantic in Burgau, Portugal
Portugal · 7 days
Days are built around the surf. You get picked up or walk to the beach with your group, and lessons typically run in the morning when the wind is lighter. Your instructor explains the day's spot and conditions, then you warm up on the sand, practise the pop-up, and head into the water. Groups are split by ability, so if you have never stood on a board you will be in the white water with an instructor close by, while more experienced surfers head out the back with coaching on turning and wave selection.
After the session you eat, rest, and often go back in for a second surf in the afternoon — either another coached session or a free surf with boards available. Evenings are free. Burgau has a handful of restaurants within walking distance, and the camp also runs excursions into the surrounding area.
The location is the main reason to come. The Algarve is one of Europe's most reliable surf destinations: warm water, Mediterranean-style climate, and a coastline that offers both the south coast's gentler beach breaks and the west coast's more powerful Atlantic waves near Sagres. That range means the school can move you to the spot that suits your level and the day's forecast instead of surfing the same beach all week.
Accommodation choice changes the feel of the trip. The WAVE CULTURE Surf Lodge and the apartments in Burgau put you in the village near the beach and its restaurants. The Surf Camp in Sagres sits further west, closer to the big exposed Atlantic beaches. There is also time for non-surfing activities — swimming, coastal walks along the cliffs, and visits to the small fishing towns with their markets and boutiques.
The school has operated here with its International Surf School partner since 2003, which is a long run for a surf camp. Instructors are in the water with you rather than shouting from the beach, and the priority is getting you standing and riding safely before pushing you into bigger waves. Board and wetsuit are provided, so you don't need to bring your own gear.
