United States · 7 days
Pritikin follows a set programme rather than a pick-and-mix timetable. Each day combines group exercise classes (cardiovascular work, strength training, stretching and water-based movement), classroom sessions on nutrition and health, and supervised cooking demonstrations. There are also one-on-one consultations with physicians and dietitians woven through the week so progress can be reviewed against measured data rather than how guests feel.
What most guests notice first is the structure. Meals are prepared on-site according to the Pritikin eating plan — plant-forward, high in fibre, low in added fat and free of added sugar and salt. The cooking sessions show how this is done in a normal kitchen, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks. The misconception that healthy food is bland gets dismantled fairly quickly; guests are taught to use herbs, spices and natural flavours in place of the salt and fat they're used to.
Progress is tracked physically. Metabolic testing and DEXA scans are used to measure body composition, with the aim of preserving muscle while losing fat — this is the heart of the programme's approach. Dieting aggressively and losing muscle slows metabolism, which is why the staff prioritise composition changes over the number on the scale. Trainers use wearable heart-rate monitors during cardio so intensity is set against the individual's actual exertion, with the goal of building sustainable fitness rather than burning someone out.
The setting itself is a resort within a larger luxury property in south Florida-1,000 sq ft of grounds and tropical gardens that guests can walk in between sessions. Florida is warm year-round, so outdoor walking and garden time are part of the daily rhythm rather than an occasional bonus. Accommodation is on-site and included, which is what makes the programme work: no commuting, no outside meals, no distractions from the plan.
The programme is based on the work of Nathan Pritikin and has been running for decades — Oprah.com and The Today Show have both referenced it over the years. It's not a boot camp. Guests range from people dealing with metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol to people who simply want to reset their diet and fitness habits under professional supervision. The through-line is education: measurements, cooking skills and the specific techniques for building meals and workouts that survive contact with normal life.
