South Tyrol · 7 days
Saalen is a tiny hamlet in the Puster Valley, a few kilometres from St. Lorenzen (San Lorenzo di Sebato) and about an hour from Bolzano by road. The hotel — Saalerwirt — is a farmhouse with a long history, run by the Tauber family. The yoga rooms are among the lily pond, protected from view. The larger of the two panorama rooms has big glass fronts and airy ceiling heights, so you look out at the mountains while you practise. The forest platform is a five-minute walk away through the trees; if you've only ever done yoga in a studio with fluorescent lights, practising on larch wood in a clearing with a woodpecker hammering somewhere behind you is a different thing entirely.
Classes run every day. The programme is described as 'one varied class per day, free for all guests, minimum two people, all abilities.' The style rotates — some days slow and grounding, other days dynamic and strong. It's led by a team of certified yoga instructors, and Magdalena Tauber is part of that teaching team and also offers massage and beauty treatments. Guests have a say in the vibe; because the classes are small and the schedule is flexible, the instructor often adapts the sequence to whoever's in the room.
The food is a big part of the stay. The kitchen uses organic produce from the hotel's own farm, herbs picked from the kitchen garden, and regional products from the surrounding valley. South Tyrolean cooking is a mix of Austrian and Italian — think speck, dark rye bread, apple strudel, but also fresh pasta and vegetables from the garden. The wellness facilities are part of the programme too: there's a sauna area for warming up after a walk, and an ecological natural swimming pond for cooling down.
The rooms are furnished with South Tyrolean Swiss pine wood, which gives off a distinctive scent (pine has been used in Alpine sleep environments for centuries). Mattresses are orthopaedic, bedding is plant fibre, and suites are built to reduce electromagnetic radiation. That's unusual even among wellness hotels, and it's one of the things that makes this property stand apart.
What makes this different from a standard yoga retreat is that nothing is compulsory. The yoga is included daily and free, but you're not signing up for a fixed week of scheduled sessions. You can build the retreat yourself: do both a morning and afternoon class if you want, or do one class and spend the rest of the day walking in the forest, swimming in the pond, having a massage, or sitting on the bathing jetty watching dragonflies. The hotel is open year-round, and it does specific retreat weeks with visiting international teachers several times a year in addition to the regular daily programme — those are the weeks to book if you want a more intensive, structured retreat.
