Home › Retreats › Authentic Balinese Yoga & Cultural Immersion Retreat
Indonesia · 6 days · From USD 344
The retreat is run entirely by local people in Sesandan, a spiritual village near Mount Watukaru, on the quieter side of Bali. You won't find beach clubs or boutique spas here—just a working village, a newly built pool, and a daily schedule built around yoga and hands-on culture.
Your mornings start with a 90-minute Watukaru Yoga class, followed by breakfast and a morning cultural activity. These are the heart of the experience: you might be knee-deep in a rice paddy learning to plant, making coconut oil from scratch, or folding palm-leaf offerings for the local temple. Afternoons bring a second yoga session, then another activity—a waterfall purification, a Balinese music class, or a chat with the village shaman.
The yoga itself is traditional Balinese Watukaru Yoga, one of the oldest styles in the world. Legend says 13 yogis from India came to Bali thousands of years ago and blended their practices into this style. It's less about sweating and more about meditation, chanting, and pranayama, with the physical postures as a way to prepare the body for stillness.
You'll be hosted by Dewi, who manages the retreat and teaches. She spent years working in the rice fields before teaching herself English and yoga; now she teaches both guests and local women and children. Her co-teacher, I Krishna, has been teaching Balinese yoga and meditation for a decade. Both are warm, hands-on, and genuinely happy to share their practice.
