Ayurveda & Yoga Wellness Week in the Himalayas

Ayurveda & Yoga Wellness Week in the Himalayas

Rishikesh · 7 days · From USD 602

The retreat runs on a traditional ashram-style schedule, which means early mornings and early nights. Wake-up is at 5am, and by 6am you're in the yoga shala for an hour of asana practice. This is followed by 30 minutes of pranayama and another 30 minutes of meditation before breakfast at 8:15am. The yoga styles covered include Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Sivananda, Kundalini, and Chakra yoga — you'll get exposure to several approaches over the week rather than focusing on just one.

Day one centres on the Ayurvedic consultation. A doctor assesses your constitution (dosha) and prescribes the treatments you'll receive during the week. From day two onwards, treatments run mid-morning: expect Abhyanga (full-body warm oil massage), Shirodhara (continuous warm oil poured on the forehead), and Karnpurna (herbal ear cleaning). These aren't spa add-ons — they're core to the programme and included in the price.

Afternoons mix theory and practice. You'll attend classes on Ayurveda basics, Indian philosophy, and yoga theory, with time for questions. One evening includes an Ayurvedic cooking class where you prepare a meal together. There's also at least one excursion to a cave or waterfall, a walk along the Ganges, an ashram visit, and the Ganga Aarti — the nightly fire ceremony on the riverbank that draws hundreds of people.

The school asks you to limit phone use and skip TV, newspapers, and magazines for the week. It's not enforced, but the idea is to let the rhythm of the schedule and the quiet of the location do their work without distraction. Free time is yours — walk into town, rent a bicycle, visit temples, or just rest on the terrace. The accommodation is simple and clean, with private rooms available, air conditioning, and wifi when you want it.
