Ayurvedic Healing & Yoga Escape in Gozo, Malta

Malta · 8 days · From EUR 955

Shesha Ayurveda Europe runs out of a house in San Lawrenz, on the island of Gozo. The team is the European arm of an Indian operation, and they work exclusively with their own products — oils, herbal blends, decoctions — which are made in Kerala and shipped to Europe. That's the concrete difference between this and a European spa calling something 'ayurvedic'. If you have had treatments in India and found the versions abroad a bit thin, this is closer to the source, although the room you sleep in is Mediterranean.

The programme starts with a consultation. What you eat, which oils are used, how long each therapy runs and how hard the yoga is are all set from that. Expect roughly two to three hours of treatment time on a typical day, with morning yoga (usually gentle, sometimes restorative) and simple breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some days include a herbal steam, some a specific massage, and most include a period of quiet afterwards where you are simply left alone to let the treatment settle.

The founder's background combines Indian classical training with years of practice in Europe, and the team is small — usually two or three therapists working with a handful of guests. That's why treatments feel personal here, and why the schedule has space in it. If you want to lie down for three hours after shirodhara instead of going to a class, that's fine.

The house is set in a village rather than on the coast, and the walk to the nearest restaurant takes about five minutes. Dwejra Bay, with the collapsed Azure Window and the Inland Sea, is a fifteen-minute drive; the cliffs at Ta' Cenc are reachable in about twenty. A car isn't essential for the retreat itself, but if you want to explore the island between treatments, it's worth hiring one. Gozo is small — nothing is more than half an hour away.

By the end of a week most people notice the same two or three things: they are sleeping better, they have stopped snacking, and they have a short list of habits they could actually keep. The team writes out a simple follow-up plan — which herbs to continue, which foods to favour — before you leave, and that's included.
