Ayurvedic Panchakarma Detox & Yoga Retreat in the Himalayan Foothills

Ayurvedic Panchakarma Detox & Yoga Retreat in the Himalayan Foothills

Nepal · 7 days · From USD 785

The retreat runs on traditional Ayurvedic principles, but you don't need to know anything about Ayurveda to join. On day one, you'll have a consultation with Dr. Binod Ghimire or one of the resident physicians, who work out your dosha and design a treatment plan for the week. Then every day you'll receive a couple of hours of individualized therapies—Abhyanga, a full-body medicated oil massage that gets your circulation going; Swedana, an herbal steam to draw out toxins; Shirodhara, warm oil poured steadily over your forehead to quiet the mind; and sometimes Pinda Sweda, a compress massage with herbal boluses that eases muscle tension.

The yoga and meditation sessions are led by a team with serious credentials. Nabin Hangkhim has been teaching for over two decades and covers everything from Ashtanga to Kriya to his own style he's developed over the years. Dr. Chandra Katuwal brings a PhD in Raj Yoga Meditation and a background in health education. Mornings typically start with a practice, and evenings might be a sound healing session with Tibetan singing bowls or a restorative class.

The setting is a big part of the experience. Jungle Mahal sits 7 km from Kathmandu, tucked into the hills where the only sounds are birds and wind in the trees. Rooms face either the jungle or, when the weather cooperates, the Himalayas. The property has a pool, a sauna, a spa, and a yoga shala, but you'll probably spend most of your free time on the balconies or hiking the nearby trails with a guide.

Food is a non-alcoholic, vegetarian affair, all sourced from local farms. Meals are prepared with buckwheat, millet, barley, rice, and garden vegetables, finished with wild honey and Himalayan ghee. Most dishes are naturally gluten-free, and there's always herbal tea and detox water on hand. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included.

This isn't a bootcamp or a hardcore cleanse where you're starving. It's a steady, supported week of treatments, good food, and rest. By day six, empty stomachs and quiet evenings feel normal. By day seven, most guests say they feel lighter, calmer, and more connected to themselves.
