Home › Retreats › Ayurvedic Wellness Escape in a French Château with Daily Massages
France · 4 days · From USD 730
The retreat runs over four days and three nights at Château de La Pierre, a château that has been hosting retreats since 2019. The program is a complete immersion into Ayurvedic practices, rather than just a series of treatments. Each day starts with morning yoga, followed by breakfast, then gives you space for walks, reading, or naps before an afternoon Ayurvedic massage or meditation session. The pace is slow, and the setting—centuries-old trees, light-filled rooms, the quiet French countryside—does a lot of the relaxing for you.
What sets this retreat apart is the level of expertise. Marianne Durand is an Ayurveda practitioner and senior massage therapist who has trained with teachers including Vaidya Atreya Smith in Europe and Dr. Joshi and Dr. Sapna in India. She learned Ayurveda while living in Sivananda yoga ashrams, and she has created signature treatments like Shilābhyanga, a hot stone massage that works on deep tissues and energy circulation. The oils used are genuine medicinal herbal blends sourced from Kerala, not generic spa products. This is the same kind of care you would receive at a traditional Ayurvedic center in India, transported to the French countryside.
The retreat also includes education. An introductory workshop covers the basics of Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle, explaining the six tastes and the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, Kapha. You will learn why meals are structured a certain way and which foods favor your constitution. Guests typically leave with practical knowledge they can apply at home. All meals are vegetarian and mostly vegan, cooked according to Ayurvedic principles with a focus on digestion.
The location itself is part of the experience. Cérilly is a small village in the Allier department, an area known as the birthplace of the last kings of France. The château is surrounded by 16 hectares of parkland, and the nearby Forêt de Tronçais offers easy walking paths. There are also lakes for swimming and kayaking in the summer, plus local markets and medieval villages to visit. A retreat here feels like an escape into another era, where time moves more slowly.
