Indonesia · 8 days · From USD 440
Bali Garden Retreat occupies a corner of Sesandan village that most tourists never see. There's no beach out front and no Ubud café scene around the corner — instead, you're looking at mountains and rice paddies, with the nearest town a short drive away. The property itself is built in traditional Balinese style: open-air pavilions, tropical gardens, a pool, and bungalows scattered through the grounds.
Mornings start with a 90-minute Vinyasa or Hatha class followed by meditation, led by either Teddi (a former banker who left finance to teach yoga full-time and is known for keeping things light) or Adi (who's been practising Balinese Watukaru yoga for three decades and runs the pranayama and chakra sessions). After breakfast, there's usually a village excursion — visiting a local temple, watching a traditional dance rehearsal, or learning to assemble the flower offerings that Balinese families make daily.
Afternoons alternate between more yoga and free time. Every few days, the group heads to a waterfall for a purification ritual, which involves standing under cold water while a guide chants — surprisingly bracing. Beach yoga happens twice a week at a spot along the coast.
Food is served family-style: Indonesian dishes like gado-gado, tempeh satay, nasi goreng, and fresh tropical juices. Everything is vegetarian or vegan, with options for those who want regular meals. The kitchen uses local organic produce where possible.
The retreat draws a mix of solo travellers and couples, most of them first-time yoga practitioners or people returning to the mat after years away. It's not a place for intensive training or athletic challenge — it's built for rest, basic instruction, and a slower pace than most of us manage at home.
