Basque Country Surf Camp: Learn to Surf in San Sebastián

Spain · 7 days

Ujusansa started in the late 90s when four friends from Slovenia took a trip to Anglet, France, and got hooked on surfing. They set up Slovenia's first exclusively surfing club, ran a camp in Anglet for nine years, then moved south to the Basque Country. That's where the camp still operates, and the same people — now older, more experienced and still surfing daily — are behind it. It's a family-run-feeling operation with a long history and a strong community of returning guests.

Surf lessons are the core of the week. You'll be in the water most days, with instructors who've been teaching for years and who know the local breaks well. Groups are split by ability, so first-timers learn the basics on the inside reform while more experienced surfers get guidance on reading waves, turning and positioning. The camp is based close to San Sebastián, so you get access to the beaches around that stretch of coast — beach breaks that work in a range of conditions, and a town that's famous for its food.

What makes this different from a lot of surf camps is that it's not a franchise or a seasonal pop-up. The team lives and breathes this, running events and trips throughout the year and treating guests like part of the group rather than customers. They also offer a family programme, with specific care for kids, so it's a place where you can come solo, with friends, or with your family and all find your level.

The camp itself is simple: shared accommodation, meals together, and a relaxed atmosphere. You won't find a luxury resort here, but you will find a spot where people hang out after surfing, talk about waves, and plan the next session. The Basque Country setting means you're close to San Sebastián, with its pintxos bars and beaches, and the surrounding coastline offers plenty of options if you want to explore beyond the camp.

A typical week gives you a mix of structured surf lessons and free time. Mornings often start with breakfast, then a session in the water or a theory class if the waves are flat. Afternoons are for another surf, or rest, or a trip into town. Evenings are communal — dinners cooked at camp or eaten out, and plenty of stories about the day's waves. The emphasis is on progression and fun, not on clocking up hours in a gym or following a strict wellness schedule.
