Beginner-Friendly Surf & Yoga Week on the Caribbean Coast of Panama

Panama · 8 days · From EUR 1795

Playa Venao is a horseshoe bay on Panama's Azuero Peninsula, roughly five hours by road from Panama City. The beach break here is famously mellow — long, soft, rolling waves that break over sand with nothing sharp underneath. That is why the camp can promise that most guests are surfing by the end of the week, even if they have never stood on a board. Mornings usually have the cleanest, smallest waves, so that is when the first surf session runs.

A typical day runs like this: coffee and fruit at 7, surf theory or a video analysis session around 8, then into the water from about 9 to 11. Breakfast follows, then the middle of the day is free — pool, hammock, air-conditioned room, or a walk along the beach. Late afternoon brings a second surf session or a free-surf, depending on conditions and how tired everyone is. Yoga is usually in the late afternoon on the deck, then dinner is served family-style around a long table. After dark, people sit around and talk, or head to one of the beach bars a short walk away.

Because the group is capped small, the coaching is genuinely one-to-one. Instructors watch each person paddle, correct body position on the board, tell you when to commit to a wave, and pull you back out if you are drifting. Board choice — soft-top longboards for beginners, shorter boards for anyone more experienced — is sorted on the first day. Wetsuits aren't needed; the water here is warm year-round, so most people surf in boardshorts or swimwear.

The yoga is not an afterthought. It runs daily, usually vinyasa or a slower stretch-focused class, aimed at the shoulders, hips and lower back you will have used paddling. Mats, blocks and straps are provided. It is optional — no one chases you if you'd rather keep surfing — but most people do it because it makes the next day's session feel easier.

Food is a big part of the week. Three meals a day are cooked on site, mostly fresh fish, chicken, rice, beans, plantains, tropical fruit and salads, with vegetarian and vegan versions made on request. Panama's produce is the highlight — mangoes, papayas, pineapple, and coffee grown up in the highlands. Dietary requirements can be handled if you flag them at the time of booking.

What separates this from other surf camps is mostly the ratio and the setting. With a maximum of eight guests and instructors in the water alongside you, you get the attention that bigger camps cannot give. And the property is right on the beach — you are not driving to the break each morning, you are walking to it.
