Beppu Onsen Wellness & Sound Healing Retreat in Japan

Japan · 2 days · From USD 561

Beppu sits on the northeastern coast of Kyushu, ringed by mountains and ocean, with steam rising from vents all over town. It's been a hot spring destination for centuries, and this retreat leans into that heritage. Over two days, you'll experience the town the way a local would—soaking in public baths, walking the steaming streets of Kannawa, and eating food cooked by geothermal steam. The retreat host, Shin, lives here and runs a small ocean-view studio called Solfeggio, where he teaches music and leads sound healing.

What makes this different from a typical onsen holiday is the combination of sound, nature, and culture. Sound baths happen daily, using instruments you don't often hear together: handpan, singing bowls, guitar, ukulele, didgeridoo. These sessions are meant to calm your nervous system, and they're led by someone who's been performing and teaching for years. Yoga is gentle and adjustable—if you prefer ashtanga over hatha, just say so. Meditation and pranayama are also part of the daily rhythm.

Accommodation choices shape the experience. Stay at Sakura Beach Resort in Hiji for ocean views and sunrises, with optional SUP rentals. Choose the private house in Kannawa to have your own onsen bath in the heart of the steam town. Or opt for Fukiji Temple, a National Treasure site, where you can join morning Zen meditation and sutra copying. Each option puts you in a different version of Beppu, but all are within easy reach of the day's activities.

Food is a highlight. Beppu's jigoku mushi steam cooking uses natural geothermal steam to cook vegetables, seafood, and eggs—simple and delicious. You'll also have access to fresh sashimi, local set meals, and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Shin can arrange cooking experiences if you want to learn how to make a few Japanese dishes yourself.

This is a small retreat, usually just you and a few other guests, so the itinerary stays flexible. If it rains, plans shift to indoor sound sessions and cafés. If you're loving the onsen, you can spend more time soaking. The goal is rest, not a packed schedule.
