Bahamas · 5 days
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat sits on Paradise Island in Nassau, right on the water, and the detox programmes are built around its existing daily schedule. Mornings begin early with a meditation and chanting session, followed by a two-hour hatha yoga class covering the Sivananda sequence of asanas, pranayama and relaxation. Breakfast is vegetarian and served in the main dining hall. Depending on which detox week you've chosen, meals may be modified — the juice-fast weeks with Manu Dawson replace solid food with raw food, fruit and vegetable juices plus detoxifying herbs and supplements, ending on a raw food diet. The GLO Fresh Food Reset weeks with Grace Van Berkum focus entirely on fresh plant-based food rather than fasting. Ayurvedic weeks with Acharya Shunya, Ramkumar Kutty or Marc Halpern centre on kitchari, herbal support and eating in line with the season.
Afternoon workshops are where the teaching happens — Ayurvedic theory, digestive health, breathwork, food preparation, or Yoga Nidra depending on the leader. Manu Dawson, who runs the fall, New Year and spring cleanses, is a long-standing teacher at this ashram and his weeks are the most structured fasts in the calendar, with a set juice protocol and herbs. Grace Van Berkum's GLO resets are more food-focused, aimed at people who want to eat their way back to better energy rather than skip meals. The January kitchari cleanse with Marc Halpern and Andrea Deerheart combines an Ayurvedic mono-diet with Yoga Nidra practice, so the cleanse is as much about sleep and nervous-system rest as about digestion.
Evenings follow the ashram's standard programme: sunset meditation, chanting, a vegetarian dinner, and often a talk or satsang. Lights tend to go out early because the next morning starts around 6am. There is no alcohol and no meat served anywhere on the property.
What separates this from a spa detox is that you're sharing the grounds with people on the Yoga Vacation Programme, on teacher training, and on week-long residential karma yoga stays. Meals are communal, the schedule is fixed, and the day has a shape to it that you don't get to rearrange. If you want a bespoke one-to-one cleanse with a private chef, this isn't that. If you want a proper routine, Ayurvedic teachers who've been doing this for decades, and a beach you can walk on between sessions, it is.
The property is a short drive from Nassau's airport and connected by bridge to New Providence. There's a Well Being Center on site offering Ayurvedic treatments, massage and consultations, and a boutique for basics. Excursions can be arranged to the surrounding island, but most people who come for a cleanse week stay on the grounds — the point is to keep things simple for the duration.
