Digital Detox & Silent Nature Retreat on Lake Saimaa, Finland

Finland · 8 days · From EUR 1500

The retreat runs Monday to Monday for seven nights. You're collected from Imatra railway station (the transfer is included in the price) and driven to the property on the shore of Lake Saimaa. Arrival day is about landing gently: Maiju shows you around, explains how the week works, and you all go into digital detox and silence together. There's a PDF guide sent in advance called "Orientate to the retreat" so you arrive already knowing what to expect.

From Tuesday the days are yours. There is no fixed timetable. Instead you get a therapeutic retreat manual with guided mindfulness practices, reflective writing exercises, emotional and embodiment awareness practices, dreamwork, creative writing prompts and nature connection practices. You choose what to do and when. The recommendation is to spend as much time outside as possible. Practical options on site include a yoga tent for personal practice, hammocks, picnic tables, a two-kilometre natural sand beach you can walk to, a rowing boat, a SUP board, kayaks for getting out to nearby islands, mountain bikes for the trip to the village shop, and a punching bag if you want to move something through the body.

Indoors there's a forest therapy library for reading and journaling, quiet rooms for reflection and a fireplace. Three vegetarian meals a day are included: you make your own breakfast and lunch from pre-selected ingredients using a recipe book, and dinner is made together, either shared or in turns, without any pressure. You eat outdoors where possible. Professional wellness treatments — massage, for example, or a traditional sauna ritual — can be booked as extras, and treatment days fall on the Tuesday and Thursday of the week.

What makes this different from a typical yoga or wellness retreat is that nothing is added. There are no scheduled classes to attend and no group sessions to keep up with. The work is subtractive: no phone, no constant availability, no information overload, no social performance. The digital fast is the full seven days, not a token 48 hours, because the founders found shorter fasts don't let the process fully develop. Around day three or four, guests typically notice sleep improving and the mind settling. Part of the manual is a self-paced process for building a digital well-being plan so the change survives the trip home.

The property itself is designed to blur the line between inside and out. Big windows let in light and lake views; the rooms and detached cabins look over Saimaa. Facilities are simple and shared: three eco-toilets, a warm outdoor shower, a washing station, and a beach sauna that's heated every other evening. This isn't a hotel — it's closer to a cabin stay with good design, and the point is comfort rather than luxury. Guests write about the location, the quiet and the lack of technology as the things that stayed with them. If you want to bring your own group, Utula can be reserved exclusively for 5–10 people, self-guided or facilitated, with optional catering and tailored sessions.
