Douro Valley Granfondo Cycling Camp: 4 Days of Riding Portugal's Wine Country

Day one is a transfer from Porto airport to Peso da Régua, where you check into the Vila Galé hotel. Your guide runs a briefing and bike fit so everyone starts the next day set up correctly. There's usually time for a short spin to loosen the legs before dinner, which is eaten together at a local restaurant.

The next day is the first proper guided ride through the Douro region. These routes are chosen for the views as much as the riding — think quiet roads through terraced vineyards, stops at iconic viewpoints, and a wine farm or two along the way. A support vehicle carries spare wheels, tools and food, so you can ride without carrying much. The second ride day follows a similar pattern, giving you a feel for the terrain and road surfaces before the event.

Race day starts early. You're five minutes from the start, so there's no long transfer. The guides handle the logistics — you just ride your chosen distance. After you cross the line there's a post-race massage back at the hotel, then a group dinner.

The final morning is a transfer back to Porto airport. Over the four days you get up to two guided rides, three dinners, three nights in a four-star hotel with breakfast, and full support from a team that rides with you rather than pointing at a map and leaving. The wine tasting and winery visit are part of the experience, which sets this apart from a pure race-entry package.
