Family Summer Week at a Costa Rica Mountain Farm: Tents, Rivers and Long Tables

Costa Rica · 7 days

A normal day at Kinkára starts at 7:00 with espresso and a farm breakfast as the mist lifts off the pasture. Lunch at 12:00 is built around whatever the farm harvested that morning, cooked by a kitchen that works with the valley's long-standing growers. At 15:00 people walk down to the river — waterfalls and swimming holes, a short walk from the table. Dinner at 18:30 is at long tables around a wood fire, children usually still barefoot from the afternoon. By 20:00 local musicians and neighbours are playing under the canvas of the main hall.

During the summer family week that rhythm gets a programme layered on top. Children are with the programme team for river days, time with the horses, farm work, crafts and free play. Adults have movement sessions and unhurried meals, and the afternoons are left open on purpose. Meals and music nights are the points where everyone comes back together.

The setting does a lot of the work. The property sits at the foot of Chirripó, Costa Rica's highest mountain, with open-air halls, studios and gardens, plus river access on site. The tents are Lotus Belles — canvas structures, not hotel rooms — grouped into three villages across the property.

What separates this from a standard family camp is the kitchen and the land. Menus move with the seasons and with what the farm and the valley's growers actually produce, and the chef team handles dietary needs on site rather than outsourcing them. The founder, David Comfort, built Kinkára the same way he built RISE: around the table and around the family.

Group capacity is up to 40 adult guests across the three tent villages, or up to 60 people for family programmes. The property is also used by outside organisers running wellness, yoga, leadership and family retreats, and for weddings and company offsites that take the whole place.
