Fight Culture Boxing Camp: High-Altitude Training and Recovery in Portugal's Serra da Estrela

Portugal · 5 days · From EUR 2000

Boxing at 1000 metres changes the game. The thin air makes every round feel harder, and the mountain trails become part of your conditioning. Fight Culture Camp leans into that: sessions rotate between the gym, the glass-walled movement hall, and outdoor spots like the lake and a local castle. Coach João leads most of it, splitting you into two small groups of four to six so he can see every jab and correct it in real time. The week is structured so that training gets progressively more demanding, with recovery built in rather than tacked on.

Day one eases you in with introductions and a wood-fired pizza workshop before your first boxing session, a skill assessment where João pairs you up to find your rhythm. From there, the intensity climbs: trail runs through the Geopark, a distance-and-timing boxing session, personalised strength and conditioning, then a bike ride to a castle for a session with a view. By day four you're into technical sparring, with every round reviewed by João and your teammates so you leave with a clear plan for your training back home. The final morning applies all that feedback in one last pad-work session before a closing BBQ lunch.

What sets this apart from a standard boxing camp is the recovery programme woven into each day. You get two therapeutic massages during the week — one 30-minute deep tissue session to prep your body, and a 60-minute sports recovery ritual after the sparring day. The hotel's spa, with sauna, hammam and heated jacuzzi, is open to you throughout. Dinners are chef-prepared with vegetarian options, and there are healthy snacks between sessions. Optional extras like a lake swim or mobility session let you choose how to spend your downtime.

João's background is a big part of the camp's character. He's a Portuguese Kickboxing Cup champion (2025), has 12 official fights across boxing, kickboxing and MMA, holds a black belt in kickboxing, and has a degree in Physical Education plus a postgraduate in Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation. His coaching is science-backed but experience-driven, meaning you get technical detail without losing the feel of a real fight camp. He'll challenge you, but he's also the first to adjust a drill if your shoulder's acting up.

The location itself does a lot of the work. Serra da Estrela is Portugal's highest mountain range, and the hotel sits inside a UNESCO Global Geopark. You're training at altitude with wide open sky, running trails that locals use for ultra races, and cycling past granite villages. The 14-hectare private grounds mean you're not sharing the space with other groups, and the infinity pool overlooking the valley is where a lot of guests end up after lunch. If you want to extend your stay, the Covão dos Conchos trail — a famous sinkhole with a tunnel that looks like something from a fantasy film — is a recommended way to close the trip.
