Forest Yoga & Ayurveda Wellness Escape in Sri Lanka

Forest Yoga & Ayurveda Wellness Escape in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka · 3 days · From USD 344

Nelum Nikethana is a spice estate that has been allowed to grow into a natural forest, just two and a half kilometres from the centre of Kandy. The retreat centre sits within that forest, so the soundscape is birdsong and rustling leaves rather than traffic. It's a different world from the city, but a short tuk-tuk ride gets you back to town for anything you need.

The program is built around yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, practiced in their most traditional forms. Mornings start with herbal soup, followed by a hatha yoga session led by Radesh Kangathilakar, who trained in Rishikesh under Swami Rudradev and is also a certified Tai Chi instructor. After breakfast and a mindfulness meditation session, the afternoon opens up. You'll have an Ayurvedic doctor consultation and a massage therapy session, which is tailored to your body's needs based on the consultation.

The unusual part is that this is a genuinely working spice forest. You're surrounded by cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, and other spices growing wild. The centre offers Sri Lankan traditional cookery demonstrations, so you can learn to use these fresh ingredients yourself. One guest, a wildlife enthusiast, called it a hidden gem, noting the wealth of birds, reptiles, and amphibians on the property. Another guest who came specifically for the Ayurvedic angle found the food and the relaxation methods so effective that they left planning to make meditation a daily habit.

Radesh is the lead teacher for both yoga and the broader wellness program, bringing his Tai Chi training into the mix. He's supported by a doctor who conducts the Ayurvedic consultations. Together, they keep the experience personal—there are usually only two to ten participants on site at any time, so you're not one of a crowd.

The retreat is short—three days and two nights—which makes it an ideal add-on to a wider trip around Sri Lanka or a quick reset if you're already in the Kandy area. The price, which is a fraction of what you'd pay for similar retreats in more tourist-heavy parts of the country, has surprised more than one guest in a good way.
