Tuscany · 7 days · From USD 2800 (indicative)
Mornings start with an optional group meditation, then a yoga class led by Julia or Andrew. Every class is pitched at beginners, so you don't need a regular practice to keep up. After class there's a chef-prepared breakfast on the estate, and then the day either stays local or heads out to one of the surrounding hill towns.
The outings fill most of the week. Three of the town visits come with a private tour guide, followed by free time to wander, shop and find lunch. A fourth town is just free time without a guide. Other days bring a wine visit and tasting, a trip to an olive oil mill to see how the oil is pressed and taste it, and a picnic lunch on a farm in Tuscany. One evening is a fresh pasta class with a chef, and you eat what you've made for dinner.
Two evenings end with a restorative and gentle yoga class, the slower, floor-based kind that suits sore legs after a day of walking cobbled streets. Every other night there's a three-course dinner cooked by the chef on the estate.
The estate itself, La Dogana, belongs to Lucia, a friend of the teachers who also acts as the retreat's host. She answers inquiries, helps with room choices and add-ons, and is around during the week. The property is a historic 100-acre olive grove on the northern hills of Lake Trasimeno, so the scenery is olive trees, rolling hills and a view down to the water.
What sets this apart from many Italy yoga weeks is the balance. The yoga is short and easy, and it's paired with a lot of food and town visits that are already arranged for you, with guides and transport handled. You can also add a guided hike, an extra tour of Siena with a museum visit and an entrance to one of its contrade (the historic city districts), a massage with the estate's masseuse, or an herbal remedy class.
Julia Jonson and Andrew Gurvey teach at TBY Yoga, a studio based in Libertyville, Illinois. TBY Yoga runs classes, an on-demand platform, one-to-one instruction and yoga teacher training, and this retreat is part of its events program.
