Guided Mount Kenya Trekking Adventure: Chogoria to Sirimon Summit Retreat

The trek starts in Nairobi, where the team picks you up for the drive to the mountain's eastern side. From the Chogoria Gate, the trail climbs through dense indigenous forest, then bamboo, then giant heather moorlands. You'll pass Lake Ellis and the Hall Tarns — small lakes that sit in cirques left by ancient glaciers. The Gorges Valley is a standout: a huge U-shaped valley with sheer rock walls that drops away from the trail. Camps are set at designated sites, and the support crew has dinner ready when you arrive. Evenings are short — after dark it's cold and everyone turns in early, but the stars are incredible with no light pollution.

The summit attempt starts around 2 a.m. from the last camp. Headlamps on, you climb switchbacks in the dark, often on scree, until you reach Point Lenana as the sky starts to lighten. The view at sunrise takes in the surrounding peaks and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro to the south. The descent follows the Sirimon Route through Mackinder's Valley, with its giant lobelias and senecio plants, before dropping to the Sirimon Gate and the drive back to Nairobi. The expedition company, Arch Treks & Safaris LTD, has been running this route for years. Their lead, Jacob Voroga, handles logistics personally — the guides, cooks, and porters all work together to keep the group safe and fed. Daily yoga and stretching sessions are worked into the schedule to help with the physical demands, which is a nice touch you won't find with many mountain operators.
