United States · 7 days
The daily shape of a Konalani retreat is consistent across themes: morning yoga and meditation, three communal vegetarian meals, a workshop or excursion in the middle of the day, and an evening practice or gathering. Yoga here is described as regenerative and fascia-informed Hatha and Vinyasa, rooted in functional movement science and the ShambhavAnanda lineage. In practice that means slower, more deliberate work on movement patterns rather than a fast flow class — though Vinyasa and Restorative styles both appear. Pranayama is taught as a science-based practice, and meditation is led by resident Acharyas in the shrine room.
What separates this from a standard yoga holiday is the ashram setting. The ShambhavAnanda lineage is a 100-year tradition, and practices include mantra, Vedic fire ceremony and kirtan alongside asana. Each retreat is also held within the energy of a principal deity — Tara, Shiva, Medicine Buddha or Hanuman depending on the programme — which becomes a focus for meditation and contemplation through the week. You don't need to share the tradition to take part; participants of all spiritual backgrounds are welcomed.
Excursions are built into every retreat. Guests visit Kaloko-Honokohau National Park for snorkelling — the bay is protected and shallow, with coral reef, fish, octopus and sea turtles. There's a beach and town trip to Kailua-Kona for shops, cafes and coastline. A mala-making workshop uses Rudraksha seeds grown on the ashram grounds, and you learn to use the finished mala with a lineage mantra.
The property is at 77-6484 Sea View Circle, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740, minutes from the ocean and about 25 minutes from Kona International Airport (KOA). Most guests take an Uber or Lyft from the airport. The land is tropical, with ocean views and the quiet rhythm of island life — mango harvests are part of ashram life here, and the grounds are used for practice and ceremony.
Retreats run throughout the year with different themes and lengths. The Aloha Retreat is seven nights and runs almost monthly. The Regenerative Yoga Retreat is a 19-day deep dive. The Yoga Immersion Retreat runs 11 nights and 10 days. Roots, Rise, Resilience and Dance of Shakti are shorter themed retreats, some of which can also be taken as 300-hour teacher training modules. Retreat guests and teacher training students share the same practices, workshops, meals and excursions — the difference is that training students complete teaching practicums and assignments and receive a Yoga Alliance accredited certificate.
