HYROX Preparation Camp in Fuerteventura: Race-Specific Training with Hugo Hugemark

Canary Islands · 5 days · From EUR 450

Playitas Resort sits on the east coast of Fuerteventura, about a 10-minute drive from the airport, and it’s long been a base for triathletes, swimmers and functional fitness athletes. The HYROX Preparation Camp takes over part of the resort for five days, with sessions run by Hugo Hugemark. Hugo is a Playitas ambassador and HYROX coach who has raced the format himself, so the coaching comes from someone who knows what the stations actually feel like at race pace. This isn’t a generic fitness week — every session is mapped to a race scenario.

A typical day starts with a technique or pacing session in the functional zone, usually focused on one or two HYROX stations (sled push/pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, ski erg, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls). After lunch, there’s a run session — often compromised running, where you run after a station to simulate race fatigue. Evenings are for recovery, video review, or a talk on race-day logistics. One afternoon is kept lighter to allow for an open-water swim or a mobility session, depending on the group.

The camp is deliberately not about maximum training load. The aim is to arrive at the start line fresh and with a plan. Hugo works with each athlete on their pacing strategy: where to push, where to hold back, how to manage heart rate across the eight stations and the runs between them. You’ll do at least one full race simulation, broken into segments, so you can test your plan before race day. There’s also a session on transitions — how to move efficiently through the roxzone and set up your gear.

Playitas makes the logistics easy. Accommodation is on site, meals are served in the main restaurant, and training facilities are within a few minutes’ walk. The resort has a 50m outdoor pool, a functional training area with sleds and ergs, and a gym with free weights. There’s also a spa with sauna and steam room, plus direct access to a quiet stretch of coastline for open-water swims or easy runs. The whole place is set up for athletes, so you’re surrounded by people doing similar things.

What sets this camp apart from a standard HYROX weekend is the combination of coach-led race strategy and the training environment. You’re not just doing the movements; you’re learning why and when to use them. Hugo’s approach is calm and analytical — he’ll break down your race into segments, look at your strengths and weaknesses, and help you build a plan that fits you. It’s suitable for anyone who can already complete the HYROX movements at a basic level, whether you’re targeting a sub-90-minute finish or just want to get through it feeling strong.

The group is kept small enough that you get individual attention, and there’s a good mix of solo athletes and pairs. Evenings are relaxed — some people head to the spa, others sit by the pool. The resort has a few bars and restaurants, but it’s not a party place; most people are in bed early. If you’re bringing a partner who isn’t training, they can use the resort’s other facilities or explore the island while you’re in sessions.
