Polwaththa Eco Lodges is a haven nestled in the jungle, 19 kilometers east of Kandy, offering a unique 'living-in-the-jungle' experience. This family-run property is committed to responsible tourism, practicing the three R's and sourcing all purchases from within 5 kilometers. The retreat is designed for yogis of all levels who seek an authentic connection with nature and local culture. Your stay directly supports the Forest Healing Foundation, an initiative that purchases land for reforestation and works to protect the area's biodiversity, home to over 60 species of birds, including 15 endemic ones, as well as monkeys, deer, giant squirrels, and playful porcupines.
The daily yoga practice, held in a jungle shala walkable from the lodge, is a highlight. Classes in Vinyasa, Yin, Hatha, and Restorative yoga cater to all levels, with a focus on internal awareness and personal benefit rather than performance. Led by experienced teachers like Freya, a UK-born practitioner with global training, each session is an opportunity to deepen your practice and find stillness amidst the vibrant jungle soundtrack. The retreat also weaves in cultural immersion: you'll hike through local villages and tea plantations, swim beneath a cascading waterfall, and learn to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes with women from a nearby village. These hands-on experiences provide a window into a simpler way of life and foster a profound sense of connection.
Sustainability is at the core of the Polwaththa experience. Guests are encouraged to participate in the tree planting program, contributing to the region's reforestation and directly supporting the local ecosystem. The eco-lodges offer basic but comfortable accommodation with en-suite bathrooms and private balconies, ensuring you're never far from the sights and sounds of the jungle. The warm hospitality of the local staff, the delicious home-cooked meals featuring local produce, and the sense of community make this more than a retreat—it's an unforgettable journey that nourishes the body, mind, and soul.
